Teacher Of The Month: Shelby Young

Posted: Updated:

Shelby Young, a sixth-grade teacher at Hagan Elementary has won KUMVs Teacher of the Month Award for June.

This is Young's first year teaching. She graduated from college in Mississippi back in May of 2013. She explained what inspired her to want to be a teacher.

"I had this one teacher in the fourth grade and she was awful. I was like, I want to be one of those teachers everyone thinks is fun, and we also get our work done. I didn't want to be one of those worksheet teachers that gives you one worksheet after another. After that fourth-grade teacher, I decided I was going to change everything,” says Young.

Young's students appreciate her dedication to the class and her overall teaching style

“She’s really nice, and she’s respectful to us. She doesn’t treat us like kids. We joke around with her like friends,” says Umutcan Tavan.

“She cares about us, and if something’s wrong she fixes it. She doesn't just leave it. She treats us like her friends, not like kindergartners,” says Havanah Nelson.

“She's nice and she respects us. If we need help with something she explains it better than a lot of teachers” says Cameron Harmon.

Young’s undeniable passion for her job and unique perspective sets her apart from many.

“She has a real passion for teaching. She’s really interested in what the kids are about and who they are and where they come from. I think she’s got a new outlook on things and she really brings her own perspective," says Hagan Elementary Principal Darla Ratzik.

Young explained her favorite aspect of teaching

"When the light bulb goes on. And you're like, yay they understood the way I taught it. They got it, we can move on with things,” says Young.

Young added she enjoys teaching English the most.
