Officers Present Railroad Awards

Posted: Updated:
There are currently more than 4,500 railroad crossings in North Dakota, and with that comes the risk for injury accidents and fatalities.

The average train travels at 55 miles per hour and takes a mile or more to stop, but nearly 50 percent of vehicle/train collisions happen at crossings with active warning devices like gates, bells and lights.

Thursday, law enforcement officers were stationed at different crossings in Minot, Stanley and Springbrook observing traffic. Drivers who observed crossing the tracks safely were pulled aside by officers and rewarded for their efforts.

"People need to focus and pay a little more attention when they're driving and pay attention to those advancing warning signs notifying them that the crossings are coming up and take their foot off the gas and be prepared to yield to a train if there is one approaching,” says Ben Dahl a Canadian Pacific Railroad special agent.

If your vehicle stalls or hangs up on the tracks, get out immediately, move away from the tracks and locate the emergency phone number located near the crossing to call for help.
