U.S. Attorney General Speaks At Tribal Conference

Posted: Updated:

All of a sudden North Dakota is getting lots of attention from Washington, D.C. A member of President Obama's cabinet made a visit to Bismarck this afternoon.

It's the first time a U.S. Attorney General has visited the state in 50 years.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder spoke at the fourth annual Tribal Consultation Conference this afternoon at United Tribes Technical College.

Holder says by working together, tribal and federal leaders have made a positive impact in the lives of Native Americans.

"Despite the injustices of our troubled past and the obstacles that undoubtedly lie ahead, I can't help but feel confident in our ability to move forward together, speaking with one voice, standing as one people, and building on the legacies of those who have gone before. May their examples begin to inspire us, may their efforts continue to guide us, and may we continue to honor their lives and their sacrifices in all of our daily work," says Holder.

Holder says the federal government will continue to work with tribes to improve educational opportunities for juveniles who are detained by law enforcement, to bolster training opportunities for federal employees working in Indian Country, and to seek new ways to integrate existing services to better assist children on tribal lands.
