Donut Sales Benefit the Salvation Army

Posted: Updated:

It's National Donut Day, and a local business is selling special donuts and donating the profits.

National Donut Day is celebrated across the country on the first Friday of June. It was started by the Salvation Army during the Great Depression to raise funds and awareness of the program.

“Today we're having a special and tomorrow on our donuts that are eight count glaze donuts,” says Cash Wise cake decorator Susan Perry. "And they're in a special box that is of the Salvation Army.”

The Salvation Army is partnering with all the Cash Wise stores to sell the special boxes. For every box sold, the stores will donate a dollar to help provide shelter for parents and children.

When people come into a bakery, they have many options to choose from, especially with the variety of donut choices. The hardest part is deciding which ones to pick.

“I just put my favorite ones in it,” says fifth grader Andrew Halland.

“I just kind of look to see which ones go first, and the leftover ones I tend to not get anymore,” says Amy Brehm.

“You want some cake donuts,” says Perry. “You want Bismarcks, which are jelly-filled. You want the long johns. The long johns with the cream-filling are really good. We also have a bacon maple, which is really outstanding, and then our regular traditional round donuts.”

Perry says her favorite donut is the old-fashioned cake donut.

Cash Wise will sell the special boxes until tomorrow.
