Ag Grants Available for North Dakota Businesses

Posted: Updated:
North Dakotans have been selling their homegrown or handmade products through Pride of Dakota for nearly 30 years. And now, other businesses can profit by using those products.

The program offers grants to hospitality businesses that use specialty crops or Pride of Dakota products in their menus.

Pride of Dakota products can be found at several retailers across the state. It's to the benefit of local restaurants to use those products in the meals they serve.

"Maybe if I'm already making an apple pie maybe I want to go a little further and get my apples from a local apple orchard and then I can feature that on my menu," says Jamie Good a local foods marketing specialist.

A business that uses a Pride of Dakota product like this can get up to a $1,000 grant through the program.

"We just thought this hospitality grant would be a really great opportunity to help get those companies and their products, their wonderful products they're making right here in the state, out in front of the public more. Through different channels like restaurants or cafe's or hotels, that maybe have a restaurant or lounge in them," says Kelly Wald a Pride of Dakota marketing specialist.

The North Dakota Department of Agriculture currently has $6,000 to use for the grants.

"Being the first year we wanted to start small so we've got a sizeable amount of money, and we'll see how it's received this year. Then we do have some plans in the works, potentially looking at next year already," says Good.

Buying Pride of Dakota products has more benefits than just supporting local businesses.

"People are so interested in where their food comes from. It's just a great opportunity to really show them that look we do grow these things here in North Dakota and you maybe didn't realize it but now you can see it and you are actually seeing the product from the farm or the garden or the backyard, to the table," says Wald.
