Woman Living in her Former School

Posted: Updated:

Many of us remember junior high as if it was yesterday. For others, it's more of a vague memory, but for Williston resident, Shirley Trogstad, it’s much easier to remember the past, as she has just moved into her former junior high school.

Lutheran Social Services turned the old Williston junior high into affordable senior apartments. Trogstad had a special request when she learned about the openings at legacy living.

“I said, you know, I went to school there and I'd like to see if I could get my study hall room. I know several people had their applications in already, but she said, I don't think that one is taken, would you like it? And I said yes, put me down for it” explained Trogstad.

Trogstad says living in her old home room has brought back a lot of fond memories from her days at the school.

"I had a classmate visit me here the other day and we were sitting on the couch and talking and visiting and my friend said, yes and Mrs. Moes' desk was right on that rug" added Trogstad.

Lutheran Social Services Housing works with smaller communities in North Dakota on whatever housing challenges they may face.

“We knew that we would want to do a project in Williston, to provide attractive, affordable and safe housing for older residents who possibly were getting sort of priced out of the rental market. This was the first project that we've done in Williston" said Lisa Richmond, partnership and outreach coordinator for Lutheran Social Services Housing.

Legacy Living has been a huge success and Trogstad is extremely grateful.

"I feel really blessed. I'm so happy for how this turned out with Lutheran social services" said Trogstad.

Trogstad has been in her apartment for two months now.
