Doctors Recommend Waiting 39 to 41 Weeks for Baby

Posted: Updated:

You're in the home stretch, those final weeks of your pregnancy, and even though it might be tempting to get induced early, doctors say a full-term pregnancy can help avoid some respiratory problems.

"Even at 37 and 38 weeks, when they're supposed to be term, they still have breathing problems and end up in the neonatal intensive care unit on oxygen," says Dr. Shari Orser of Sanford Health. "Usually these are short-term things, but it's not something we want babies to go through."

Tracy Nardello is a veteran when it comes to having children, and she agrees. If you can, carry that baby all the way through.

"I would encourage you to go full-term...do it," says Nardello. "If there's a need for you to go early then that's fine. For instance, if you're having trouble with your pregnancy, if you're just not feeling right then do it. But otherwise, go as far as you can."

Now, of course there are some exceptions when it comes to early inductions.

"High blood pressure, intrauterine growth restriction, multiple gestation," says Orser.

On the other hand, doctors say there are cases in which the baby just doesn't want to come out and that can lead to some problems as well.

"Beyond 41 weeks and especially beyond 42 weeks, two weeks past the due date, we start to see a higher incidence of stillbirth, hypoxia, babies may lose wight in the uterus if they go too long, the placenta may not function as well anymore," says Dr. Orser.

So even though it might not be the most comfortable experience, doctors say have a little patience. Because keeping that bun in the oven for the right amount of time will keep everyone happy.
