Heitkamp Speaks about Sex Trafficking

Posted: Updated:

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp wants Congress to do more to combat human and sex trafficking not just in the United States but around the world.

She spoke before a Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee today, and says there needs to be unity among governments in raising awareness of trafficking crimes and of violence against women.

"We know those countries that are most violent against their women and children, who are most impoverished, are the least stable, present the greatest national security risk. So, we have to address this problem not only from a human rights stand point, but from a national security standpoint," says Heitkamp.

Heitkamp added that there needs to be more support for the victims of these crimes.
