Sturm Shares Personal Story to Raise Awareness

Posted: Updated:
A Bismarck woman says she was drugged while out at a bar with friends over the weekend, and she wants to speak out about the incident to help prevent it from happening to others.

People often think this is a crime that is more of a concern in major cities, but the woman it happened to wants people to know it can happen anywhere.

When she's not on air at URL radio Stacy Sturm is working with the God's child project to raise awareness about sex trafficking and how to protect yourself from dangerous situations.

"I just did a talk at a conference in Fargo on personal safety. We talked about getting roofied, we talked about rufilin, we talked about the derivatives, we talked about how to keep safe and how to keep smart. That was just Thursday night and this happened Friday. So, if it can happen to me, making one small mistake, it can happen to anybody," says Sturm.

Sturm says she was out with a few friends and only had a few drinks, but she felt worse than she should have.

When she left the bar she realized something was wrong and sent a text to a friend.

"I said something is really wrong. I think I've been drugged, and thank god for me, he was there within minutes," says Sturm.

She ended up in the ER, but when she got home she quickly put her story on Facebook, and the post was shared more than 700 times and

"A lot of women have reached out to me and shared personal stories too. So, not only hopefully have I created hopefully a culture where women are going to be more safe when they go out. I've opened up a dialogue too where they know it's not ok for them to get roofied, it wasn't their fault," says Sturm.

Patrick Atkinson, founder of the God's Child Project, says both men and women need to pay attention to their surroundings, never leave your drink unattended and know your tolerance.

"If you have one or two drinks and all the sudden you're like oh my gosh I can barely walk, somethings wrong and if you listen to your senses, if you feel that something is wrong then something is wrong. Contact your friends, be with your friends, go to your friends and say I don't feel right and get out of there because you could be going into a situation that is going to change your life forever," says Atkinson.

Stacy says she hopes her story will help other people know the signs, so they don't end up in a scary situation.
