Senate Names June PTSD Month

Posted: Updated:

Many soldiers who return from war bring home more than just physical scars.

The U.S. Senate this week passed a resolution to recognize June as national Post Traumatic Stress Disorder month to help bring awareness to an issue that impacts so many.

Post traumatic stress disorder can impact anyone, especially those who serve our country in high stress situations.

"It's one of the few things that's completely treatable. It takes some time and it takes some commitment but it's one of the mental health symptoms that there's a great deal of success in treating," says psychologist Dr. Kirby Schmidtgall.

Which is why he says it's important to seek help and know the signs to watch for.

"Typically re-experiencing the event would be one. Some people experience nightmares, avoidance, avoidance of certain situations that remind the person of the event," says Schmidtgall.

Chaplain David Johnson with the North Dakota National guard works with people who suffer from PTSD and says the most important thing you can do is find a support system.

"We got to make sure we connect in with that so that when it is a concern, whether it's PTSD or the stuff that hits us in life day to day, that we've got an appropriate way to access help and to receive that help," says Johnson.

And he says to never be ashamed to get help.

"If you don't get help then physically and every other way you're being affected and that ripples out into every other part of your life," says Johnson.

It's also important to listen to family and friends if they say they have noticed a change in your behavior.

The resolution was introduced by Sen. Heidi Heitkamp and co-sponsored by Sen. John Hoeven.
