Legacy Expands to Hughes and Portables

Posted: Updated:

Bismarck Public Schools put the horse before the cart, that's what some can argue, since Legacy High School has a growing population of students but still no school to put them in.

Administrators say they're working to alleviate the over crowding by spreading out students from the Career Academy to eight portable classrooms and the Hughes Education Center.

Legacy High School doubled in size, and administrators said they had two options, put more portables on Bismarck State College Campus or just find more space somewhere else.

The school district says cramming more than 500 high schoolers into the Career Academy on Bismarck State College's campus was not an ideal situation.

Frankly, there's no room.

That's why legacy freshman and sophomores will be having classes in the Hughes Center, with additional classroom portables outside.

"It's temporary thing. They'll be there for a year, Legacy will open and they'll remove those, the portables from that area," says Darin Scherr the facilities and transportation director."

Legacy's principal says his students and staff are very flexible and don't see the movement as inconvenience.

"Excitement of next year is what's building up on this year right now. I think they see the light at the end. That we're gonna be at the new building in the end. It's a different type of excitement," says Legacy High School Principal Tom Schmidt.

The idea of spreading out students between the Career Academy, for science and physical education classes, the Hughes center and portable classrooms, for the other classes, can appear to be too much movement.

"We'll have less movement next year being at Hughes with the portables than we had last year, being at six different buildings up at the college campus," says Schmidt.

"For the most part they're gonna be in the one location. They're all gonna be eating lunch together. They will have to go off site for a few classes, but essentially they're creating. They might not have their school building yet, but they have their community," says Scherr.

Administrators say the community is very supportive of the transition.

Construction for Legacy High School is on schedule and should be completed next fall in 2015.
