Rain Dampens McQuade Tournament

Posted: Updated:
Yesterday's rain washed out the game packed day of McQuade's Charity Softball Tournament and teams who lost game deciding coin-flips weren't the only ones feeling the sting.

With day passes costing $5 a piece for spectators plus losing a full day of t-shirt sales, it's estimated that the charity missed out on making about $10,000. But the tournament committee says Friday night brought in record breaking crowds, and they're expecting to see a packed day for the championships games.

A rain out hasn't happened in the 38 years the tournament has been held, but committee members say it wasn't the worst case scenario.

"If you're going to have a rain out day, the ideal day to have it I suppose would be Saturday," says tournament committee member Shannon McQuade-Ely. "None is ideal, obviously, but we got the gate on Friday, we got people buying t-shirts on Friday, the wounded warriors and the exhibition games got played and then they get to play again today so, really, the big days as far as crowds are concerned, are really Friday and Sunday for us."

And although there was a strong wind today, Ely said it actually helped dry out the fields in time for the games.
