City Expands Curbside Program

Posted: Updated:

The curbside recycling program might be fairly new to Bismarck, but city leaders say they're ready to roll out the next phase. A residential curbside recycling program has been in the works for almost a decade, and on March 31 it was finally launched. Now, that a few bugs are worked out of the system, the city says it's ready to expand the service.

A pop can here, a cardboard box there, it doesn't sound like much, but when it comes to recycling a little goes a long way. Just a few months after Bismarck launched the curbside recycling program for single family homes and duplexes, the city is ready to hand out more bins.

"I've had some people get a hold of us and say you know we would like to do it too we're in these other larger units when do we have a chance?" says Public Service Director Jeff Heintz.

The program is now being offered to residents in condominiums and townhouses. Waste Management estimates that it removes 100 tons of material per week from the waste stream. Bismarck's recycling specialist says having the single sort system is what makes it so effective.

"That's the beauty of it, and that's what we're hearing so much of. Everything just goes into the one container, there's no sorting or separating anything," says Bismarck Recycling Specialist Galen Bren.

Bren says in just the three months since they launched the curbside recycling program, they've collected nearly as much recycled material as they did all last year. This will decrease the amount of landfill volume.

"It will definitely make a change to it all too. I don't have the cubic yards, we haven't penciled that out to see where it's at, but it will make a difference," says Bren.

The curbside recycling program costs $3.81 cents a month, which is added to residents water bills.
