DMR Sets Flaring Goal

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota's oil and gas regulators have set a goal to reduce the flaring of natural gas to 15 percent within two years. To achieve this goal, the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) has been working on an order that would capture the gas instead of flaring it.

On June 1, companies that applied for a drilling permit were also required to submit a gas capture plan, which would outline how the company planned to capture the gas, and required companies to work with midstream companies.

"We've only issues about 20 permits so far that have come in post June 1 with that gas capture plan. We're really just taking our time and looking through those and making sure the operators give all the information submitted to us that they need to," says Alison Ritter of the Department of Mineral Resources.

The Industrial Commission will get its first look at an order drawn up by the DMR tomorrow, which will contain rules and specifics on how to cut down flaring.
