High Water Causes Gainsborough Evacuation

Posted: Updated:

A mandatory evacuation has been ordered for residents of the town of Gainsborough in southeastern Saskatchewan.

The evacuation was issued on Sunday night after a weekend of heavy rains. Water has poured over a dam on the Gainsborough Creek near the town of Redvers. Several highways in southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba are closed because of water running over the roadways.

Emergency measures operations out of Carnduff say that Gainsborough is about 80 percent covered in water, but the water has started to recede.

Currently, they are working on clearing roads to create safe access for residents. Problems with the dam pour-over will have no impact on the Mouse River in North Dakota.
