North Dakota Guard Members Assist in Border Patrol

Posted: Updated:
President Obama and Congress are at odds over how to deal with the country's immigration problem on the southern border.

But while policy is being debated in Washington, members of the North Dakota National Guard are continuing their efforts to help protect the border.

For the last two years, members of the guard have been assisting border patrol in Harlingen, Texas.

Currently, there are three guardsmen in Texas flying at night looking for illegals crossing, and drugs that are being brought into the U.S.

"We've rotated soldiers down there so at our peak over the last year we've been at five to six soldiers. But right now, we're at a state of about three. In January, we could go a little more robust down there depending on what type of funding we receive and what type of mission direction we receive from the higher headquarters," says Col. Jerry Anderson of the North Dakota National Guard.

Anderson says the North Dakota National Guard has been helping with border patrol off and on since 2006.
