Family Focus: Children's Music Academy

Posted: Updated:

He may only be three years old, but Henry Dockendorf knows what he likes.

“I like to sing,” he says.

As for his favorite animal, it’s a monkey. He’s also pretty good at telling you what noise a monkey makes.

Henry gets to sing and practice these noises at the Children’s Music Academy in Minot.

When his mom, Kristina, told him it was time for music class, it’s no surprise that he was happy.

“His eyes just lit up and he’s been singing the entire time we got here,” she says.

Henry is part of a pre-junior course at the academy that emphasizes ear training and note reading for young children.

Owner and teacher Denisse Cameron says it’s a broad based music program that uses musical instruments to train ears at a young age. The program also helps them hear syllables.

“Like monkey, it’s two sounds,” Cameron says. “We clap two times and get them accustomed to hearing the music in their world by starting with syllables.”

In most cases, this is the first formal education setting. Children aren’t used to sitting still, following directions and doing what the leader is telling them to do.

With only one week left in the program, Kristina has already noticed a difference in her son.

She says the classes have really helped his attention span, and he’s able to follow directions with the teacher giving instructions.

The academy is a parent participation program, meaning mom or dad accompanies their child to class.

Cameron says it’s a great bonding time for the children, because they have 45 to 50 minutes of learning in the security of a group, with mom or dad right beside them.
