Minot Public Works Treating Water on Friday

Posted: Updated:

Residents in the Minot area might smell a slight odor of chlorine in their water over the next couple of days.

That's because the Minot Water Works is doing their annual chlorine dump Friday, July 25, where for one day they switch from their usual chloramine solution to regular, free chlorine.

The disinfection will affect residents in the cities of Berthold, Burlington, and Kenmare, as well as the West River Water District, Upper Souris Water District, and the All Seasons Waters Users District.

It's a way to enhance the plant's disinfecting process.

"Chloramine is not a very effective disinfectant but it has the ability to have long residuals in the water," says Minot Water Plant Supervisor Alan Verbitsky, "where, free chlorine is an incredibly good disinfectant but its residual time tends to be somewhat shorter."

Verbitsky adds that the chlorine levels are not harmful.

Since free chlorine is odorless, the smell is caused by when the chlorine gets to bacteria in the pipes.

The smell should only last for a couple days.
