History at the Heritage Center

Posted: Updated:
As North Dakota closes in on it's 125th year of statehood, a special celebration today honored the cultures that were here before that.

Musicians, artists and presenters from different Native American tribes in North Dakota performed at the Heritage Center throughout the day. Hundreds of spectators came out to learn more about traditions unique to these cultures. And both organizers and performers say it's important to understand how these cultures shaped the state North Dakota is today.

"The tribes existed before statehood of North Dakota so, it's good that they include all the tribes. There's seven different tribes in the state of North Dakota to include their history of how important they were in the formulation of the Dakota territories and into the state of North Dakota," says Les Thomas of the Turtle Mountain Tourism Association.

"The performance is about the old time fiddle music that went on the Lewis and Clark journey and that was done over 200 years ago, and we still have that same music today," says presenter Doc Brien.

There will be another exhibit of the seven tribes in November with the official 125th celebration of North Dakota's Statehood.
