Inside Business: Lewis and Clark Animal Hospital

Posted: Updated:
The world of veterinary medicine is changing rapidly and local vets are keeping up with the times.

Dr. Kelly Thorsness grew up around animals in rural North Dakota and becoming a veterinarian just seemed like the logical thing for him to do.

"I grew up on the farm so I was always taking care of the farm cats and dogs. It grew more and more into becoming a veterinarian," he says.

When Thorsness opened Lewis and Clark Animal Hospital in 2008, he wanted to make sure that his four-legged patients, and their two-legged owners, go home healthy and happy.

"I've always said its been more of the, seeing the enjoyment on peoples faces when their animals go home healthy," he says.

And he's seen plenty of changes in the field of veterinary technology.

"Veterinary medicine has been taking steps forward into getting into the digital age with digital x-rays, digital ultrasound, so you're doing away with the films and the chemicals and stuff," he says.

Lewis & Clark Animal Hospital utilizes the latest in pet veterinarian technology ranging from digital x-rays and including laser therapy to help promote healing.

"Laser technology can help anywhere there is inflammation in the body. Typically burns, bit wounds, spinal inflammation. It can penetrate through with ultra violet light, and take some of the inflammation away. Plus relieving a lot of pain," says Thorsness.

Veterinary Technician Sandy Olzweski says the Companion Therapy Laser affords a great deal of control so the operator can make sure the patient receives the right amount of therapy.

"It gives us a specific power of the watts that we do, and the time that we do it so we work on the individual area, for that amount of time, and we can do multiple areas at the same time," says Olzweski.

In his spare time, Thorsness volunteers at the Dakota Zoo, where he gets to treat even bigger cats.

Lewis and Clark Animal Hospital is located at 1522 East Main in Bismarck. You can learn more about them online at www.lachah.com.
