Liberty Elementary Ready for First School Year

Posted: Updated:
It's always exciting when a new school opens. That's the case this year for Liberty Elementary in Bismarck.

Faculty and staff say they're over the moon about it.

Even though their building was still under construction last year, Liberty Elementary students showed a lot of excitement at their first day of school pep rally in their temporary building. But that was nothing compared to their teachers' excitement as they walked from room to room in the brand new school.

They admit some sleep was lost thinking about all the what if's.

"What the building would look like. What my classroom would look like. Are my boxes all here? As I pulled up to the building I just got butterflies," says second-grade teacher Karen Arnold

Having worked in Bismarck for four years, Arnold says it's nice having something brand new, but that shouldn't be the only focus.

"I hope this new stuff will entice an excitement in learning. And give student a new passion for learning," says Arnold.

There are still some finishing touches and let's not forget that every teacher needs to unpack and get organized before September second. But Markelle Dockter says she's not too worried.

"It's not frustrating. It's nice. It's like I didn't know I had that still. Its like a present,"she says.

Dockter's team teaches so, she says having extra help unpacking is going to make the time fly by.

Looking down the empty halls, at each classroom, teachers say the novelty of the design won't wear off for a while.

"We like to leave the walls a little bare so that children, when they produce something, can put it up, and it's relevant to them," says Dockter.
Teachers say setting up the classrooms is only half the fun, the first day of school with students is the other half.

Liberty Elementary students have to wait a few more weeks to get inside their new school.

Teachers promise it will be worth the wait.
