Family Focus: College Supplies

Posted: Updated:

Buying back to school supplies can feel like a blur.

“It's absolutely necessary to have a job while I'm attending college in order to pay for things myself,” says Minot State University student Callie Cook.

Pens, notebooks, binders, calculators, and don't forget a computer. After all that, college students still need to buy their books.

“Books are the main purchase every semester,” says MSU senior Breanna Benson.

That's why some students have already started making budgets.

Cook says she's working on one right now. The budget will outline how much she needs, and how much she's going to be spending.

There are ways to cut costs, though. A lot of college book stores offer used books for cheaper prices. There are also e-books. While you can't highlight in them, you can expect a price drop.

It's not just books to try to save on. Senior financial aid counselor Lindsey Benson says living on campus is always much cheaper.

The college can also help students with budgeting.

“We can give them a pretty close budget to what they will be spending and what they need to borrow,” Benson says.

That way, students can feel prepared throughout the year.

Because Olivia's medical bills are expensive, the family has set up a Go Fund Me page. If you're interested in donating, you can use this link:
