Williston School District Fights Teacher Shortage

Posted: Updated:

Around two weeks ago, the Williston Public School District needed to hire 19 teachers for this fall.

With school starting in a couple days, the district has almost filled all of the necessary positions for this school year. They still need a teacher for first grade, fifth grade, three counselors, two music teachers and a strategist. They have a couple offers out and are waiting for the potential teachers to make their decisions. If they don't accept, the district will have some title one teachers fill in until they find more people.

"The people we hired, about 50 percent of them were within city limits so, they didn't all come from outside of the area. We had people come in and say 'You know, I have a teacher certificate or I'm able to get one. I was going to sit aside for a year. I was going to stay home for a year, but when I heard about the need, I decided to come and apply,'" says Williston Superintendent Viola LaFontaine.

LaFontaine added they will have the after school program this year because they are one of 11 districts in northwest part of the state to receive a grant. It will start September 1.
