Mississippi Coal Company Presents Green Ideas

Posted: Updated:

They might be from a different part of the country, but executives from a coal company are visiting the state to share their knowledge and research for creating cleaner burning power plants.

Southern Company owns a unique power plant in Mississippi which when completed will gasify lignite to natural gas that can be used for electricity. The carbon dioxide from the plant is captured and used as well.

"This technology has a footprint and environment footprint that is better than a natural gas plant. At the site in Mississippi we are capturing 65 percent of the carbon and of course that is used as CO2 and we are actually putting it in a pipe to send it to Louisiana where companies there can use it for enhanced oil recovery," says Chief Operating Officer Kim Greene.

Greene says the plant's technology could be a good fit for North Dakota, which has large reserves of Lignite as well as drilling for oil. The executives visited the state after a request from PSC commissioner Brian Kalk, and met with the lignite council while touring several coal mines and plants.
