July Oil Numbers

Posted: Updated:

A North Dakota Industrial Commission order aimed to cut down natural gas flaring, will go into affect on Oct. 1. And while there is still time for companies to plan to meet these goals, there's one region of the state that is flaring a greater percentage of gas.

The amount of natural gas that was burned in oil fields across the state remained the same from May to June, with 28 percent of the gas being flared. And oil regulators say there's one area in particular that continues to show high numbers.

The state captures about 72 percent of the natural gas produced, while the Fort Berthold Reservation only captures 67.

"When you do that the deadlines begin to slide, and you may end up with different techniques applied to different parcels of land in an attempt to reduce the flaring," says Lynn Helms of Department of Mineral Resources.

Helms says he plans to meet with the attorney general to discuss how to proceed with the manner, along with the Three Affiliated Tribes.
