Bismarck's Oldest School is Still Standing

Posted: Updated:
Celebrating 125 years of statehood, can make you wonder just how old are some of the buildings in Bismarck?  The oldest education building that is still standing is more than 90 years old.

School doesn't start for a few more weeks. So, as buildings and playgrounds sit empty, thoughts like 'If these walls could talk... what would they say?'

Bismarck High School is the youngest of the oldest buildings still standing. Administrators say alumni appreciate the upkeep of the school, because of all the memories.

"He walked over to a spot on the wall, and he said, 'This is where I used to leave notes for my wife when she was my girlfriend in high school,'" says Mary Hill.

Hill says she's worked at BHS for 20 years and loves every minute of it. From ceilings to staircases, the history of the main entrance Hill says the beauty is still there.

"We have still maintained that sense of an old building, that sense of tradition. That comes when you have a building that's build in 1934," says Hill.

Bismarck's oldest school no longer goes by the building name, but the Bismarck Historical Society says it's good that education is still housed there.

Richholt school was built in 1920 and it's on 14th St.," says Ann Vadnie of the State Historical Society.

It's now BECEP, but the two schools were created for the same purpose, adjusting to the growth of the city. The second oldest school Roosevelt, though not the original, still sits where the old building was.

"When they made a decision to build it on Avenue B and Anderson St., there were a lot of people saying this was building too fair out of town," says Vadnie.

An argument, Vadnie says, is made time and time again, only to be proved wrong as the city continues to spread outwards.
