Rain Causes Hefty Damage in Napoleon

Posted: Updated:
The heavy rain yesterday created problems for communities all across central North Dakota, and some areas had it worse than others.

The city of Napoleon received approximately five inches of rain in three hours, which caused city wide basement flooding, road closures and even two basements to cave in. Groundwater flooding is a problem Napoleon has had for years, but residents say Saturday's flood was like nothing they've seen before.

"My daughter came running over in tears and said our house is flooded and I mean, we always expected the daycare to flood because it always did, but we never expected our house to flood," says Napoleon resident, Anita Fettig.

"Spring floods you can kind of prepare for and you can sandbag this type of flood," says Mayor of Napoleon, Kyle Hass. "By the time you get sand bags and sand and everything lined up the damage has, for the most part, has been done because the water comes up so awful quickly when its raining at that rate."
