Hearing for the First Time

Posted: Updated:

Last month we told you about a little girl who was born completely deaf, but thanks to a cochlear implant, that's all changed.

Just one month ago, Olivia Erickson became the fourth baby to have her cochlear implant activated in Minot. Now, she can hear her family.

Since the implants were activated they have been turned up 13 times. Olivia has been responding well, and can even point to an airplane on the kitchen wall after hearing an imitation of an airplane sound.

Christy Coughlin had the same surgery eight years ago.

“When I first got it turned on it was a lot of echo and static,” she says. “Like you just want to take it out but you can't.”

For Olivia, it will also take some getting used to.

Last time I spoke to Olivia's mom, she told me she couldn't wait to tell her daughter how much she loves her.

Now, she says "I love you" all the time.

“She smiles, and she can hear me say it,” Megan says.

Coughlin has stayed in contact with the Erickson family throughout the transition.

She says it's a tremendous feeling, and she's happy to help another family.

Olivia's mom says her journey is filled with miracles every day.
