Harlow's Busing Prepares for School Year

Posted: Updated:

Although students may not be ready for the school year to start, Harlow's Busing company says its drivers are ready to take them there anyway.

The manager told me their mechanics do an 82 point checklist inspection, which can take up to three hours.

For some students, it's only a matter of days before they have to get on the bus and head to school, but bus drivers and mechanics have no time left. They need to be ready now.

"I will not mislead you, the last two weeks have been very stressful," says Harlow's Service Manager, Jerry Schaff.

With more than 150 buses needing inspection since the start of summer vacation, Harlow's says it's been no easy task.

"The collaborative effort, working with our customers is very critical and time sensitive. So, making sure we are meeting all those deadlines is exciting," says Harlow's Director of Operations, Jacob Iverson.

With 12 work stations and 12 mechanics, it seems like the work is never ending.

"Out of this specific hub, we service all of North Dakota and some parts of eastern Montana," says Iverson.

Both Iverson and Schaff say stress comes with the territory, because their precious cargo's safety is paramount.

Safety for Harlow's is across the board, from the bus to the bus driver.

Veteran driver Ken Wall says when training new drivers, he checks to makes sure they can handle the machine as well as the students.

"You have to kind of put the fire out with the children, because you don't know how they're going to react. Some of them start crying, some are, 'Wow! What's going on?' You have to be the mentor," says Wall.

Between the properly trained drivers and the bus maintenance, North Dakota students should travel with ease this school year.

For many schools in the Bismarck-Mandan area, school starts next week and Harlow's says they're ready.
